Former Rays outfielder, Tampa native Matt Joyce retires

Having played 14 seasons in the majors and with no offers for a 15th, former Rays All-Star outfielder Matt Joyce made official on Monday what had became increasingly obvious to him the last few months, formally announcing his retirement.

The Tampa native spent more time with the Rays — parts of six seasons — than any of his seven other teams, finishing with 149 home runs, a, .242 average, 898 hits and 503 RBIs while going to the postseason five times and earning All-Star honors in 2011. He spent last season with the Phillies in a limited role, hitting .091 (5-for-55) in 43 games while missing extended time with injuries.

Joyce, who turns 38 on Wednesday, said that following the lockout his only offer to play this season was in …

Royals acquire Luke Weaver from D-backs for Emmanuel Rivera

In a move to strengthen their pitching staff and give them more flexibility ahead of Tuesday’s 5 p.m. CT Trade Deadline, the Royals acquired right-hander Luke Weaver from the D-backs for third baseman Emmanuel Rivera, the club announced on Monday night.

Weaver, who turns 29 this month, has made 12 appearances (one start) for Arizona this season with a 7.71 ERA—a number that ballooned early because of right shoulder inflammation. He missed most of April and all of May dealing with the injury, but over eight appearances in July, he allowed one run on four hits to go with eight strikeouts over eight innings.

Cards to add SP depth with deal for Jose Quintana

The Cardinals are set to fortify their starting rotation with a much-needed left-hander, agreeing to a trade with the Pirates for 33-year-old southpaw José Quintana and righty reliever Chris Stratton on Monday night, according to multiple reports. Neither club has confirmed the deal.

Quintana, an 11-year MLB veteran, was 3-5 with a 3.50 ERA in 20 starts for the Pirates this season. In 103 innings, he struck out 89 batters and walked 31. Throughout his well-traveled career, Quintana has pitched for the White Sox, Cubs, Angels, Giants and Pirates.

To get Quintana, the Cardinals will surrender a pair of Cuba natives in 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo and 21-year-old third base/first base prospect Malcolm Nunez, sources told …

White Sox acquire left-hander Jake Diekman from Red Sox for catcher Reese McGuire

The White Sox acquired veteran left-hander Jake Diekman from the Red Sox in exchange for catcher Reese McGuire and a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Diekman, 35, is 5-1 with a 4.23 ERA, 51 strikeouts and 30 walks allowed over a team-high 44 appearances covering 38 1/3 innings this season.

The Red Sox were looking to shed salary and the White Sox, who were carrying three catchers with Yasmani Grandal, McGuire and Seby Zavala, filled a need having just one lefty — rookie Tanner Banks — in their bullpen.

Diekman’s contract includes salaries of $3.5 million this season and next, with a club option for $4 million in 2024.

Diekman is 25-26 with a 3.77 ERA and 15 saves over 11 major-league seasons with Philadelphia …

Boston Red Sox finalizing trade for Tommy Pham of Cincinnati Reds, sources say

The Boston Red Sox are finalizing a deal to acquire outfielder Tommy Pham from the Cincinnati Reds, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Monday

It wasn’t immediately known the full extent of the trade package.

News of Pham’s addition came shortly after Boston agreed to send longtime catcher Christian Vazquez to the Houston Astros.

Whether the Red Sox would be a buyer or seller before Tuesday’s trade deadline had been one of the biggest question marks in baseball. Boston has struggled since the All-Star break, dropping to 51-52 and into last place in the AL East. However, it’s just 3.5 games behind the final AL wild card spot entering Monday night’s play.

Astros to add backstop depth in deal for Christian Vázquez

The Astros are adding backstop depth ahead of the Trade Deadline, agreeing to a deal with the Red Sox for catcher Christian Vázquez on Monday, a source told MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart. The clubs have not confirmed the move.

This is the second move Houston made in the span of a few hours, first dealing for Orioles 1B/DH Trey Mancini.

Vázquez is a surehanded catcher who can provide offensive production as well, and he won a World Series with Boston in 2018. He’s slashing .282/.327/.432 this season.

Atlanta Braves extend Austin Riley with massive contract

The Atlanta Braves have signed star third baseman Austin Riley to a 10-year, $212 million contract, the team announced Monday.

The deal runs through the 2032 season, and it includes a $20 million club option for 2033. Riley also agreed to donate $2.12 million to the Atlanta Braves Foundation, according to the team.

The news comes just weeks after the 25-year-old Riley appeared in his first All-Star Game. He’s currently hitting .301 with 29 home runs and 68 RBI, with a .964 OPS in 101 games this season. His 61 extra-base hits are the most in the majors, and included 26 in July—which broke Hank Aaron’s previous franchise record by one (1961).

Frankie Montas, Lou Trivino traded to Yankees (source)

The Yankees made another big splash ahead of the Trade Deadline, acquiring starter Frankie Montas and reliever Lou Trivino from the Athletics, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Monday. The clubs have not confirmed the news.

The A’s return included a quartet of Yankees top prospects: left-handers Ken Waldichuk (New York’s No. 5 prospect/No. 70 overall) and JP Sears (No. 20), right-hander Luis Medina (No. 10) and second baseman Cooper Bowman (No. 21), according to Feinsand.

Source: San Diego Padres get Milwaukee Brewers closer Josh Hader in trade, send out closer Taylor Rogers

The Milwaukee Brewers are trading star reliever Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres, a source told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Monday.

Hader, an All-Star for the fourth time this year, leads the majors with 29 saves. Behind him with 28 saves is San Diego’s Taylor Rogers, who is being sent to Milwaukee in the trade.

In addition to Rogers, the Brewers are also getting lefty pitching prospect Robert Gasser, outfielder Esteury Ruiz and right-hander Dinelson Lamet, sources told Passan.

Hader will be a free agent after the 2023 season.

New York Yankees trade for Chicago Cubs rookie reliever Scott Effross

The New York Yankees acquired right-handed reliever Scott Effross from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for minor league right-hander Hayden Wesneski on Monday.

Effross, 28, is a sidearmer in the midst of a standout rookie season. In 44 innings, he has a 2.66 ERA, a strikeout-to-walk ratio of more than 4-to-1 and 2.19 FIP (fielding independent pitching), the 10th best in baseball among pitchers with more than 40 innings.

Trades for relievers with multiple years of team control has been a focus of teams at this deadline—and in the case of Effross, he will not reach free agency until after the 2027 season. The Yankees are betting on him retaining his effectiveness, something evaluators believe he can do in spite of a fastball that sits around …

Red Sox open to dealing these veterans at trade deadline

Boston is “listening” to trade offers involving their veteran players, with designated hitter J.D. Martinez, catcher Christian Vazquez and pitcher Nathan Eovaldi among the candidates to be moved ahead of Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported Saturday night.

Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom insisted Tuesday that his club is “trying to make the postseason” and declined to label the Red Sox as buyers or sellers at the deadline. But as Boston continues its tailspin—the team is 5-17 since July 5 and now sits 4.5 games out of a wild card spot—selling seems like the best course of action.

Martinez, Vazquez and Eovaldi all are set to hit unrestricted free agency this offseason, so it makes sense for the Red Sox …

Emotional Will Clark has No. 22 retired by SF Giants: ‘This is my Hall of Fame’

Will Clark seemingly always saved his best for when the lights were brightest. On Saturday at Oracle Park, a fitting 22 years since he hung ’em up and nearly three decades since his last game in orange and black, an emotional Clark was, once again, ready for the moment.

Fifty minutes into a pregame ceremony Saturday, the southern kid turned Bay Area icon punctuated his speech by punching the air with his left fist and declaring, “I am Will ‘The Thrill’ Clark. I am a part of San Francisco. And I am forever a Giant.”

Moments earlier, a black cloth draped over his number in left field dropped to reveal Clark’s No. 22 hanging between Monte Irvin’s No. 20 and Willie Mays’ No. 24, making his the 13th number retired by the …

Phillies acquire backup infielder Edmundo Sosa from the Cardinals for lefty reliever JoJo Romero

The Phillies’ first move ahead of the trade deadline came early Saturday afternoon when they acquired shortstop Edmundo Sosa from the Cardinals in exchange for left-handed reliever JoJo Romero, who had most recently been pitching for triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Sosa is a glove-first shortstop, who also can fill in at second base and third base. With Jean Segura able to be activated off of the 60-day injured list as early as Sunday, Sosa provides some flexibility as Segura eases back into an everyday role.

Sosa is now the Phillies’ best infield defender. Over 219⅔ innings at shortstop this season, he has five defensive runs saved and 13 defensive runs saved over his last two seasons. He is plus-7 in outs above average at shortstop over …

David Peralta traded to Rays for minor leaguer

The Rays acquired outfielder David Peralta from the D-backs for catching prospect Christian Cerda, bringing aboard a veteran hitter to bolster their lineup.

“He has a history of offensive performance that we really like, and we think he’s somebody that can kind of stabilize our lineup,” Rays GM Peter Bendix said. “Good, well-rounded baseball player.”

The trade brought a whirlwind of emotions for the 34-year-old Peralta, who is expected to join Tampa Bay for Sunday’s series finale against Cleveland. He has spent his entire nine-year Major League career with Arizona, playing 961 games for the D-backs from his debut on June 1, 2014, until his last game on Friday. But that tenure included only one trip to the postseason in 2017, …

Will Clark, Greg Maddux and the lip-reading that (allegedly) changed baseball

Sub required.

If nothing else, hearing what’s said behind the gloves supported the notion that pitchers might not be so paranoid after all when it comes to the cone of silence they wear on their non-throwing hands. You don’t think the hitter, Austin Riley, would have loved to have had an earpiece for that at-bat?

Will Clark demonstrated as much during the 1989 National League Championship Series, when he locked his gaze on Greg Maddux during a mound visit and saw him mouth the magic words — “fastball in” — before turning on an inside fastball for a tone-setting Game 1 grand slam.

In the evolution of mound visit paranoia, the case of Clark vs. Maddux still ranks among the most-cited events. But was it the seminal event in …

Report: San Diego Padres, Joe Musgrove closing in on 5-year, $100 million deal

All-Star right-hander Joe Musgrove is on the cusp of receiving a five-year, $100 million contract from his hometown San Diego Padres that would start next year.

“We’ve been working on this thing for a while. We’re definitely as close as we’ve been throughout the whole process, but I wouldn’t say it’s done,” Musgrove said after the Padres beat the Minnesota Twins 10-1 Friday night.

Two people with knowledge of the deal said before the game it should be finalized in the next few days. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal isn’t completed.

Musgrove said his agent has “made it easy on me” by taking the brunt of the negotiations during the season, “and then we talk at night and we go over what …

Rob Manfred sends 17-page letter to Senate Judiciary Committee defending MLB’s antitrust exemption

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred defended the league’s antitrust exemption in a 17-page letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday. In the letter, Manfred argued MLB’s antitrust exemption “has meaningfully improved the lives of Minor League players.”

The letter comes after the Senate Judiciary Committee requested more information on MLB’s antitrust exemption in July. The committee is looking into how the league’s antitrust exemption affects a number of areas of the game, including working conditions for minor-league players.

Manfred touched on that topic in Friday’s letter, arguing the antitrust exemption is a good thing for minor-league players and that it has helped bring baseball to communities “that otherwise could not …

Seattle Mariners finalizing deal with Cincinnati Reds for Luis Castillo, sources say

The Seattle Mariners are finalizing a deal for star pitcher Luis Castillo of the Cincinnati Reds, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Friday night.

It wasn’t immediately known the full extent of the trade package.

A 29-year-old right-hander, Castillo is arguably the top starting pitcher on the trade market. He is 4-4 with a 2.86 ERA in 14 starts for the Reds this season and has a career 3.62 ERA in six seasons, all with Cincinnati.

Castillo won’t be eligible for free agency until after the 2023 season, so the Mariners would have him for at least the rest of this year and all of next.

He’s Baseball’s Only Mud Supplier. It’s a Job He May Soon Lose.

This particular mud, hauled in buckets by one man from a secret spot along a New Jersey riverbank, is singular in its ability to cut the slippery sheen of a new baseball and provide a firm grip for the pitcher hurling it at life-threatening speed toward another human standing just 60 feet and six inches away.

Tubs of the substance are found at every major league ballpark. It is rubbed into every one of the 144 to 180 balls used in every one of the 2,430 major league games played in a season, as well as those played in the postseason. The mudding of a “pearl” — a pristine ball right out of the box — has been baseball custom for most of the last century, ever since a journeyman named Lena Blackburne presented the mud as an …

Fangraphs: 2022 Trade Value: #1 to #10

I’ll be honest: Soto’s placement on this list is partially a statement about how star power can matter more than surplus value. I think there’s still a prevailing feeling in front offices across the game that years of team control, particularly discounted years of control, are more valuable than superstardom. But Soto might challenge that feeling.

Perhaps Soto wouldn’t fetch the sixth-best offer if every player were put on the market at once. In that world, if you missed, you could just use those prospects to bid on Ramírez or Adley Rutschman. But not every player is being put on the market at once. Juan Soto is, though, and if you want to turn some prospects on your team into a 23-year-old with a career 154 wRC+, your options …

New York Mets acquire Tyler Naquin, Phillip Diehl in trade with Cincinnati Reds

The first-place New York Mets acquired outfielder Tyler Naquin and left-handed reliever Phillip Diehl from the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday night in a trade for two minor leaguers.

Cincinnati received outfielder Hector Rodríguez and right-hander Jose Acuña.

Naquin, a first-round draft pick 10 years ago, was batting .246 with seven homers and 33 RBI in 56 games for the struggling Reds, who are last in the NL Central. He homered and drove in two runs Thursday in a 7-6 loss to Miami….

The Mets view the 31-year-old Naquin as a good all-around player who can start a couple of times a week against right-handed pitching, against whom he has solid career numbers (.280/.332/.473 with 50 homers). They had been interested in him since last month …

Blue Jays announce renovation plans for Rogers Centre

For 33 years, Rogers Centre has been a multipurpose stadium that happens to host Major League Baseball games. That’s about to change.

With a $300 million renovation that will take place over the next two offseasons, the Blue Jays plan to transform the stadium into a true ballpark with modernized fan experiences and enhanced player facilities. The project, which is privately funded and the first large-scale renovation in the building’s history, will begin this winter.

“It’s going to be a dramatically different look on Opening Day of 2023,” Blue Jays president/CEO Mark Shapiro told reporters at Rogers Centre on Thursday. “The largest focus [is] modernizing fan experience. Taking a 1980s perspective of what an experience was, and …

Angels trading Shohei Ohtani is extremely unlikely, but not out of the question, per report

Would the Los Angeles Angels really trade All-Star pitcher/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani while he’s at the peak of his career? It’s been a question bandied about for a few weeks now.

Thursday, the New York Post reported that there’s at least a remote possibility it could happen. An Ohtani trade remains “extremely unlikely,” but the Angels are “perhaps for the first time not hanging up the phone” when teams come calling on Ohtani, so says the report.

Speculation here is that the Angels would wait until after a Juan Soto trade and then any team wanting Ohtani would need to beat whatever the Nationals got for Soto. Soto is younger and likely more of a sure thing moving forward, but Ohtani is essentially two players.

HEAR ME OUT! Abolish the minor leagues

So let’s remove the minors. Let’s remove the idea of a rebuild entirely. Let’s remove prospects. Every minor league team is now independent. Every league is an independent one. MLB teams get their 40-man roster and that’s it. Wanna throw promotion and relegation into it? Cool. Leading high school players can sign with any of the 120 teams that pay them a decent wage (not like MLB owners do). If they crush it in Round Rock, well, then an MLB team can pay that team $20 million or $50 million for his contract and fund their operation for the next year or three. You don’t want to pay your star catcher who’s given you everything for seven seasons? Fine, but you’ll have to pony up for someone to replace him because you can’t …
